Lockheed Martin Donates $15,000 To Advance Science And Math Education In The Bay Area
SUNNYVALE, Calif., 05-AUG-04 --
Lockheed Martin announced today that it has presented a $15,000 donation to the Bay Area-based Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education (IISME). The donation commemorates IISME's 20th Anniversary and will help advance the organization's mission to foster a strong, highly skilled workforce in mathematics, science and technology.
IISME was founded in 1985 by a consortium of San Francisco Bay Area companies in partnership with the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California at Berkeley and seeks to transform teaching and learning through industry-education partnerships.
IISME is an outstanding organization committed to enhancing math and science education ---skills which our business heavily relies upon, said Kevin Bilger, Lockheed Martin vice president and member of the IISME Senior Advisory Board. We have a long, proud tradition of investing in this important community organization and we're very pleased to extend our support on IISME's 20th Anniversary.
A key IISME initiative is its Summer Fellowship Program that places qualified teachers into local companies for an eight-week learning experience. During this period, each teacher, paired with an industry mentor, augments their science and math skills by solving real-world problems. Upon returning to the classroom, application of the industry experience helps teachers stimulate student interest in math and science and, in turn, helps students to become lifelong learners, responsible citizens, and productive employees.
This summer, Lockheed Martin is hosting a record 21 IISME fellows who are focused on technical challenges associated with satellite telecommunications, weather monitoring and other advanced technologies. Lockheed Martin is one of IISME's founding companies and has sponsored a total of 182 Teacher Fellows over the past 20 years.
We are very grateful to Lockheed Martin for this generous financial contribution and continuous support over 20 years, said Jennifer Bruckner, IISME’s Executive Director Lockheed is not only a financial supporter, but also truly a key partner in our effort to improve education in science, math and technology,
