Lockheed Martin's TACMS Penetrator Successful in First Flight Test

Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] and Sandia National Laboratories successfully conducted the first flight test of an Army Tactical Missile System - Penetrator (TACMS-P) today at White Sands Missile Range, NM.
The test was conducted under an Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD)-funded, joint U.S. Army/U.S. Navy Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) program that began in fiscal year 2001. The overall program will demonstrate integration of the Army TACMS booster with a Navy Strategic Systems Program (SSP) reentry vehicle built by Sandia. Additional flight tests are planned and several additional residual prototype missiles will be delivered to the government.
The TACMS-P ACTD has been endorsed by three Combatant Commanders to solve urgent needs within their theaters, said Ron Abbott, Lockheed Martin vice president - Tactical Missiles. By applying our experience in integrating warheads onto the combat-proven ATACMS, we will deliver to our Army customer an all-weather, quick reaction means of destroying hard and deeply buried targets.
In today's test, the TACMS-P performed as expected, achieving all test objectives including integration and separation of an Earth Penetrating Warhead (EPW) from a modified Army TACMS missile. The TACMS-P was fired from a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) M270A1 launcher at ambient conditions, and flew to a pre-determined altitude and speed to separate the EPW from the booster.
After separation, the booster locked its fins and continued on a ballistic path while the EPW guided to a fixed, hard target. Lockheed Martin is partnered with Sandia National Laboratories to design and test this newest variant of the combat proven ATACMS family of munitions.
The ATACMS family of munitions includes the ATACMS Block I, Block IA and the Block IA Unitary. The ATACMS Block IA Unitary was successfully used for the first time during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In February, Lockheed Martin received a contract to produce ATACMS Block IA Unitary missiles for the U.S. Army.
