Lockheed Martin-Built AMC-15 Satellite Launched Successfully From Baikonur
BAIKONUR COSMODROME, Kazakhstan, 15-OCT-04 -- The AMC-15 telecommunications satellite, designed and built by Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] for SES AMERICOM, was successfully launched today from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Liftoff occurred Oct. 14 at 5:23 p.m. EDT aboard a Proton rocket provided by International Launch Services (ILS). Initial contact with the satellite was confirmed at 2:52 a.m. EDT from the Lockheed Martin satellite tracking station in Uralla, Australia.
AMC-15 features one of America’s first payloads operating at Ka-band frequencies, comprising 12 125-MHz Ka-band spot beams. AMC-15 also features 24 36-MHz transponders of Ku-band capacity. SES AMERICOM has an agreement with EchoStar Communications, Inc., a leading U.S. direct broadcast system operator, to use both payloads on AMC-15.
Based on Lockheed Martin’s A2100AX satellite model, AMC-15 also represents the third of four satellites Lockheed Martin will deliver this year to SES AMERICOM. AMC-10 and AMC-11 were successfully launched on Atlas IIAS vehicles in February and May 2004, and AMC-16 is scheduled to be launched on an Atlas V in December 2004.

In recognition of the A2100's reliability, Lockheed Martin received a 2003 award for Product of the Year, from Frost & Sullivan, an independent research company. Calling it the most reliable and efficient of its class, Frost & Sullivan recognized the LMCSS-built A2100 satellite platform for its outstanding on-orbit reliability record since it was first offered in 1996. In a recent updated report, Frost & Sullivan concluded that the A2100 (is) the most reliable satellite now available for a majority of satellite applications.
The Lockheed Martin A2100 geosynchronous spacecraft series is designed to meet a wide variety of telecommunications needs including Ka-band broadband and broadcast services, fixed satellite services in C-band and Ku-band payload configurations, high-power direct broadcast services using the Ku-band frequency spectrum, and mobile satellite services using UHF, L-band, and S-band payloads. The A2100's modular design features a reduction in parts, simplified construction, increased on-orbit reliability and reduced weight and cost.
