San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed Dedicates New Lockheed Martin Facility
San Jose, Calif., 02/07/2007 -- San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed dedicated a new Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) facility here designed to support the TSAT Mission Operations System (TMOS) program. The TMOS Operation Center will be used to prototype and test program systems both before they are put to operational use and after. The Lockheed Martin team is responsible for leading the development of the advanced network that will provide a new level of high-bandwidth, secure, global communications to transform the speed of command and provide a vital information link to mobile military forces.

The new Operation Center is part of the $2 billion, 10-year contract awarded to Lockheed Martin last year to link the Transformational Satellite Communications Systems (TSAT) program to the Global Information Grid (GIG) and is expected to commence operations in 2014. Work on the TMOS program is being conducted both here in San Jose, Valley Forge, PA and Gaithersburg, MD. The program will eventually employ more than 700 people including subcontractors working around the country and specifically more than 300 in San Jose.
“In many ways, the new TMOS Operations Center will lead the way not only in testing and evaluating new systems and software, but with future upgrades as well,” said Joe Trench, vice president and general manger of the Networks & Communications Solutions Group for Lockheed Martin’s Integrated Systems & Solutions business area. “The Center provides a collaborative environment that encourages interaction between system operators, stakeholders and warfighter users throughout the program community.”
The Center’s completion is another example of the excellent progress the TMOS team is achieving so far in the program. Lockheed Martin recently completed a successful TMOS network design review with the U. S. Air Force. The two-day event marked the conclusion of a formal review process for the TSAT network design and included demonstrations of specific risk reduction activities and prototypes of critical network capabilities.
The network design review was completed five months prior to the overall TSAT System Design Review (SDR) scheduled for this spring, and it provided the entire TSAT team with detailed, network-specific information to use during system development.
“Completing a comprehensive network design review well in advance of the SDR as well as opening this facility offers key risk reduction factors for the entire TSAT program,” said Jim Ivey, Lockheed Martin’s Deputy Director for TMOS. “With this network architecture baseline, we’ve ensured that each of the TSAT segments is on the same page as we work toward SDR.”
The TSAT program represents the next step toward transitioning the Department of Defense wideband and protected communications satellite architecture into a single network comprised of multiple satellite, ground, and user segment components. The program is comprised of three operational elements: The Space Segment consisting of a five-satellite constellation for laser communications; ground terminals for radio users; and the TSAT Mission Operations System.
