Lockheed Martin Facilities Development and Operations Contract (FDOC) Earns VPP Star Status

Houston, Tx., 08/17/2009 --

Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) employees at three facilities in Houston have an especially safe working environment according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Lockheed Martin's program supporting NASA FDOC was recommended by OSHA for Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star Status. The VPP Star Status recognizes corporations that achieve a safer, healthier work environment over and above their standard compliance to OSHA requirements.

VPP is a cooperative effort between employees, the corporation, and OSHA. The team effort required to achieve VPP Star status reflects a strong grass roots effort by employees to find ways to work safely which result in reduced workers' compensation costs and increased productivity.

"VPP is all about employees - our most important resource. My main focus is that we ensure the safest work environment possible for our people," Lockheed Martin Vice President Rick Hieb said.

The company has implemented an innovative, pro-active, environmental, safety and health management system to ensure a safe working environment and promote continuous improvements. Managers encourage employees at every level to assume a leadership role in safety and health.

"I consider OSHA's recommendation for VPP Star rating an affirmation of our safety culture which encourages continuous employee focus at work and at home. This is a truly remarkable achievement and I'm extremely proud of the team that made earning the prestigious Star status possible," Program Manager Rich Jackson said.

Lockheed Martin's FDOC contract with NASA includes the development, sustaining engineering, operations and maintenance of facilities supporting training, flight design, flight planning, reconfiguration and real-time operations for human space flight programs. In addition, the contract provides development and sustainment of user software applications.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 146,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.
