Lockheed Martin Celebrates Health & Wellness Initiatives

BETHESDA, MD, 10/09/2009 -- Lockheed Martin highlighted employee health and wellness initiatives during Wellness Week Oct. 5-9. The five-day event featured the opening of a wellness center and fitness trail at its corporate headquarters in Bethesda and coincided with the start of annual enrollment for Lockheed Martin's new, common health plan focused on high quality care with incentives for employee wellness.

Highlights of Wellness Week included:

• Employees were given tours of the first of 28 new on-site Wellness Centers, where available. Employees had the chance to meet with medical staff about new on-site services including free seasonal flu vaccinations, acute-care, chronic condition counseling, wellness promotion, biometric screenings, blood work and other tests.

• Employees walked on a new half-mile fitness trail on the corporate headquarters campus in Bethesda, Md. The path's FlexiPave ground-covering, made from recycled tires and other re-used products, is an example of Lockheed Martin's focus on sustainable business practices and green sourcing of materials at sites around the world.

• Chefs held cooking demonstrations and offered insight into healthy eating options at the corporate headquarters' dining facilities to demonstrate one of many on-site cafeterias that now offer a variety of new nutritional options that utilize healthy cooking methodologies and ingredients.

"Lockheed Martin has focused on transitioning from being a traditional employer that provides benefits that treat illness to one that actively partners with employees to prevent disease and achieve the broader goal of health and wellness and preventive care," says Bill Bonk, Lockheed Martin Director of Health and Wellness "Our inaugural Wellness Week in Bethesda represents the progress we've made at reforming our own approach to providing holistic health benefits and healthcare plans to support healthy living."

For Lockheed Martin health and wellness programs are key to retaining employees, attracting new ones, improving productivity, and reducing absenteeism and managing the acceleration of health care claims costs due to chronic conditions.
