Lockheed Martin and Alliance to Save Energy Host Maryland Powersavers Competition
ROCKVILLE , Md., April 4, 2014 – Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] and the Alliance to Save Energy have launched the PowerSavers Challenge, a competition to encourage students and educators throughout Maryland to become more efficient energy consumers. The entry deadline is April 15.
For the challenge, middle and high school students will design an energy savings plan and create a video and/or pledge campaign. The top five participating schools with the most effective and creative campaigns to reduce energy use will each win $1,000.
“At Lockheed Martin, we recognize the importance of energy conservation for saving money and preserving the environment. We are thrilled to team with the Alliance to Save Energy to educate Maryland students and educators,” said Frank Armijo, vice president of energy solutions at Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Solutions. “We hope the competition inspires students to continue to apply their knowledge of energy efficiency elsewhere, as well as think about future careers in engineering.”
The top five schools will also receive training and support from the Alliance to Save Energy and a behind the scenes tour at the USA Science and Engineering Festival, April 26-27. The winning videos will be on display at Lockheed Martin’s newly redesigned Energy Solutions Center in Crystal City, Va.
"Schools nationwide spend more than $8 billion annually on energy, with an estimated 25 percent of that energy wasted. The Maryland PowerSavers Challenge encourages students to take a lead role in combating energy waste and helping their schools become more efficient," says Merrilee Harrigan, senior education advisor for the Alliance to Save Energy.
