Jim Derr Of Lockheed Martin Named FED 100 Winner
Annual Award Recognizes Innovation and Leadership in Government IT
ROCKVILLE, Md., Feb. 4, 2014 – Lockheed Martin's [NYSE: LMT] Jim Derr, director of Aviation Services for the corporation’s Information Systems & Global Solutions business, is a 2014 Federal 100 (FED 100) awardee.
Derr’s FED 100 award recognizes his work on the Federal Aviation Administration’s $2 billion Automated Flight Service Stations (AFSS) program. Derr is responsible for an 800-member team that handles more than 200,000 pre-flight weather briefing calls from pilots each month, providing important pre-flight, in-flight and search and rescue services. The program operates 24/7 from facilities throughout the United States.
“I’m honored to be included amongst such a talented cadre of leading government IT professionals,” said Derr. “This wouldn’t have been possible without the work and dedication of Lockheed Martin’s AFSS team; their work improves safety not only for pilots, but also for all users of the nation’s airspace.”
Under Derr’s leadership, the AFSS program is on track to realize significant savings over its ten years of program performance while improving customer service and safety for pilots throughout the United States. Derr has led efforts to improve safety by reducing the complexity of pre-flight briefings; developing an easy to use flight planning platform for pilots; and implementing a precise flight monitoring tool that dramatically improves first responders’ ability to locate and rescue downed pilots.
“Jim is partnering with his customer to deliver critical safety information to pilots when and where they need it. That means even safer skies for all of us,” said Paul Engola, vice president of Transportation Solutions for Lockheed Martin’s Information Systems and Global Solutions business. “His drive to innovate, combined with an ability to drive efficiency and cost-effectiveness helps his team meet program objectives.”
