M-TADS/PNVS: Overview

M-TADS/PNVS

The Modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensor (M-TADS/PNVS) system is the advanced electro-optical fire control system that AH-64D/E Apache helicopter pilots use for targeting and pilotage in day, night and/or adverse-weather missions. Fielded in 2005, M-TADS/PNVS provided immediate performance improvement over the Legacy system, increasing standoff ranging for U.S. Forces while providing aircrews with greater resolution for pilotage and  targeting, enhancing situational awareness. Designed for two-level field maintenance, M-TADS/PNVS reduces U.S. Army operation and support costs by 50 percent over the 40-year system life. Lockheed Martin has delivered more than 1,350 M-TADS/PNVS systems and spares to the U.S. Army and international customers.

M-DSA

The Modernized Day Sensor Assembly (M-DSA) is currently in production and modernizes the M-TADS/PNVS system. It brings color to the Apache cockpit.

High Reliability Turret

The High Reliability Turret will replace the legacy TADS turret assembly as the structure that interfaces with the Apache aircraft and houses the M-TADS/PNVS sensors. It also houses the motors that drive the azimuth and elevation movement of the sensors. High Reliability Turret provides reliability and maintainability improvements, resulting in operation and support cost savings of more than $695 million over the life of the Apache. It provides performance improvements that help the pilot track targets more effectively and mitigate the effects of aircraft vibration on the M-TADS/PNVS system.

Performance Based Logistics

The U.S. Army initiated a Performance Based Logistics (PBL) contract for M-TADS/PNVS in 2007, which continues to provide exceptional value today. PBL enhances system affordability and enables a supply availability rate of over 95% through efficiencies in supply chain management, depot-level support and supply and retrograde infrastructure, including: spares planning, procurement, repairs, maintenance, modifications and inventory management of fielded systems.
