Fleet Modernization

The Aegis Combat System has shown transformational capabilities since its inception to meet changing customer needs and enemy threats. The system was engineered to evolve over time.

As the fleet of in-service Aegis ships ages, and the threat increases, modernization to improve the combat capability of existing ships is essential. Two modernization programs – for both cruisers and destroyers – are currently in place that will improve warfighting capabilities, extend hull service life, and reduce total ownership cost through the fielding of Open Architecture and commercial computing technologies.

The U.S. government and Lockheed Martin have invested in a continuous process of technology upgrades in order to keep pace with the evolving threat. This process has ensured superior performance for more than 40 years and enabled ballistic missile defense capabilities.
