Our quest is to reduce total life cycle costs without affecting product quality, while also minimizing human health and environmental impacts. We continue to evolve our processes in order to make the most efficient decisions early on – from material selection and manufacture through our customers’ use phase and end of product life.
Life Cycle Considerations
As our customers further their guidance and research into program lifecycle costs and impacts, as well as emerging contaminant risks, these topics will become increasingly prevalent in contract requirements. We are anticipating customer needs by incorporating our strong culture of innovation and sustainable thinking into engineering design and program management.
Chemical Sustainability Program
For more than a decade, we have eliminated or reduced uses of hazardous chemicals in our operations. We have a formal process to identify chemicals used in our products and processes that may be substituted with less hazardous alternatives. We consider materials' published toxicity along with sustainable business practices and customer requirements.
We continue to seek opportunities to eliminate and reduce hazardous chemicals in our products and operations. We collaborate with our industry partners through the International Aerospace Environmental Group to identify and develop industry-wide solutions and common standards for working with the global supply chain on chemical regulations and other environmental issues.
|Lockheed Martin Commercial Engine Solutions – Product Stewardship Case Study
Lockheed Martin Commercial Engine Solutions (formerly Kelly Aviation Center) epitomizes a focus on sustainability and efficiency in product development and environmental stewardship. Over the past 15 years, engineers have continually improved the performance and staying power of legacy aircraft engines. Sustainable innovations on the TF39 engine that powers our C-5 aircraft have doubled the engine’s lifetime and reduced maintenance needs by two-thirds while increasing mission readiness and affordability for our customers. Our evolving product stewardship initiative takes an integrated approach to sustainability, extending from suppliers to the production line, maintenance and disposal. This lifecycle approach maximizes affordability and performance and reduces impacts on human health and the environment.
Sustainable Supply Chain
We build sustainable supplier capabilities by partnering with our supply chain to reduce adverse environmental impacts, to promote human rights, health, safety and ethical behavior, and to enable responsible supplier growth and raise standards. We define Sustainable Supply Chain Management as “management of our supply base to drive affordability and innovation through social responsibility and environmental stewardship.” The objective of Sustainable Supply Chain Management is to ensure alignment of our supply base’s social, ethical, environmental, safety and health responsibilities with Lockheed Martin’s sustainability commitments.
