Lockheed Martin Orlando Employees Raised $40,000 for the Fight Against Cancer

ORLANDO, FL, 05/10/2011 --

Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] employees from Central Florida participated in the American Cancer Society's (ACS) Relay for Life event, raising more than $40,000 in funds for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.

Lockheed Martin was the largest corporate sponsor of the 2011 Relay for Life event at Dr. Phillips High School. During the 18-hour event, three teams of Lockheed Martin employees camped out overnight and were committed to keeping at least one team member on the track at all times.

To date, the total money raised at this Relay for Life event is $145,128, and Lockheed Martin had three teams present that contributed $40,321, almost 30 percent, of that amount. Two of Lockheed Martin's teams ranked as the top two fundraising teams overall (Lockheed LDP, which raised $20,649, and Lockheed All Knighters, which raised $14,696). Sixteen of the top 20 individual fundraisers are Lockheed Martin employees.

"Cancer can bring pain and heartache to individuals and families, but events like Relay for Life offer hope for the future," said Joy Sabol, vice president of Communications at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. "Lockheed Martin employees are proud to support this vital cause. We want our efforts to enable the ACS to continue conducting research and providing important resources to aid in the fight against cancer, and ultimately save lives."

In addition to participating in the Relay for Life events, Lockheed Martin employees spent months leading up to it hosting drawings, bake sales and an online auction that raised $18,000 to support the ACS's national programs and life-saving research.

The Relay for Life event was held April 29-30. Throughout the night, teams honored cancer survivors and enjoyed entertainment, food and contests as they raised funds for research and awareness of cancer in the community. There were 68 teams, 928 participants and 116 survivors in attendance.

The Southwest Orlando Relay event was the #1 Relay in Orange County in 2010 and 2009, and in 2009 it ranked in the Top 25 Relay for Life events in the state of Florida. This year, the Southwest Orlando Relay surpassed the $1 million mark in total fundraising since it began eight years ago.
