New Navy Training Program Looks to Emerging Technology

The U.S. Navy selected Lockheed Martin for a role on its Training Data Products Contract, a new program to support the service’s training needs. The contract, awarded on Sept. 7, includes traditional training solutions and technology updates to accelerate learning and lower costs.

In all, 30 companies were selected to compete for task orders over an eight-year period. The Navy also selected 22 businesses in a small business set-aside segment of the contract.

The indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract provides a tool for the Naval Air Systems Command to quickly obtain training analysis, courseware materials and performance support systems. The resulting training products will present learner assessments, self-paced training, group training and blended training with varied delivery methods.

“There’s no doubt that training realism continues to climb with the technologies now available and scenarios adapted from current operations,” said Jim Weitzel, vice president of training solutions at Lockheed Martin Global Training and Logistics.

“The right technologies combined with human performance engineering and training system integration create the shortest path to learning,” said Weitzel. “The end game is delivering training that is effective, affordable and evolves with the operational environment.”

The Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division will administer the Training Data Products Contract for the Naval Air Systems Command and its aviation, surface, undersea and cross-warfare/international directorates. The ceiling value of the eight-year program is $780 million.

Lockheed Martin also won a role in November 2011 on the Navy’s Training Systems Contract III, a multiple award program for training system design, production, test and support.
